About the Author

Cdr. Richard F. Kaufman, USN (Ret) retired from the navy in 1970 after serving 24 years of service. He served three combat tours in the Korean War aboard four different aircraft carriers accumulating over a thousand jet flying hours before being assigned as a Guided Missile Officer aboard the USS Shangri-La aircraft carrier. He became a Chase Pilot for the Regulus I cruise missile during the Cuban Missile Crisis and holds the Distinguished Flying Cross along with five Air Medals received from previous combat duties. Following the Cuban Missile Crisis, he was assigned to the navy’s Naval Air Systems Command where he received Patent No. 3306556 for design of an Automatic Missile Guidance System, used in several navy missile systems. Cdr. Kaufman received his Ph.D from the University of Texas in 1974 and continued his career teaching at Texas Christian University and California State University, the latter as a Full Professor. After twenty years of university teaching, he retired as a Full Professor Emeritus and lives in the Sacramento area.
